In collaboration with Gravity Wave, a company dedicated to ending plastic pollution, we worked with Gravitech, a material crafted from recycled fishing nets. They challenged us to create a design from a 1x1 meter panel of this material that would enhance its value.
Given the limitations and amount of material available, we decided to incorporate elements typically found on top of side tables, into the design's negative space. This approach allowed us to use less material while increasing the product's value.
To understand the dimensions and utilization of negative space, we first created a paper prototype.
Since the Gravity Wave material could only be bent using a CNC machine and a kerfing pattern, we also constructed a wood prototype. This allowed us to test our design file and technique before working with the actual material.
Introducing the PacMan Table, a unique and functional piece made from repurposed waste. This table combines Gravity Wave material with pine wood, showcasing how discarded resources can be transformed into something beautiful and practical. The design incorporates a 90-degree angle, perfect for magazine storage, along with a built-in vase, seamlessly blending elements typically found on side tables into a cohesive, sustainably crafted, and stylish piece that complements any space.
