Challenged to create the visual identity and branding for cults or religions, we chose the Zangbeto, the traditional nocturnal guardians of the voodoo religion among the Ogu people in Africa. And created this project as if they were our clients, completely based on research.
Design System
Inspired by the Zangbetos’ rich history and the belief that they are protective spirits with supernatural powers, my team and I developed a design system that reflects their cultural significance, role as conflict mediators, and respected ancestral figures.
The dynamic logo was inspired by the Zangbeto "costume" as if viewed from an aerial perspective. To mimic the layers of dyed raffia that characterize the Zangbeto, we used different color combinations from our palette and layered them. The characteristic spinning movement performed by the Zangbeto was also recreated. Since the Zangbeto are spirits and each one is unique, we created multiple versions of the logo to represent each member individually.
Posters
The design system was developed based on hierarchy, placing at the center what is most important to the Zangbetos, keeping their community members safe. Surrounding the community is the “protective element”, text in the Zangbetos' native language, Egun.

The brochure was designed so that when opened, it reveals a community member singing a traditional Ogu chant.
These posters were adapted for Instagram stories, the text animations were designed to mirror the rhythmic beats of the cleansing ceremonies performed by the Zangbeto
